Almanac 2022

The year 2022 witnessed numerous significant developments both domestically in Türkiye and on the international stage.

Just as the world began to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the global community was confronted with the devastating consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war. The intensifying conflict triggered economic turmoil, pushing energy prices, and consequently inflation rates, to record highs.

One of the year’s most closely followed events was the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, and the grandeur of her state funeral. The killing of veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by Israeli fire sparked outrage around the world.

For Türkiye, 2022 became a year of landmark achievements. The inauguration of the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge and the Rize-Artvin Airport, both engineering marvels, alongside major advances in military technology, marked national milestones. These developments elevated Türkiye to a new level and became a source of pride for the nation.

The launch of Togg, Türkiye’s first domestically produced electric car, fulfilled a 60-year-old dream. Meanwhile, Istanbul Airport broke records and became Europe’s busiest airport.

Following the success of the Bayraktar and Akıncı UAV platforms, Baykar unveiled Kızılelma, Türkiye’s first indigenously developed unmanned fighter jet, a historic leap in warfare technology with global resonance. Hürkuş, the country’s locally developed basic training aircraft, garnered strong interest abroad, and the discovery of new energy reserves across various regions added to the year’s positive momentum.
