Looking back on art’s extraordinary journey through human history takes us tens of thousands of years into the past—to cave walls adorned with primitive paintings. Dated as far back as 40,000 BCE, these early works speak to art’s enduring role as a universal human language. And as science and archaeology advance, we may yet discover that this history reaches even further back in time.

For centuries, art in the Western world was largely devoted to the imitation of nature. But with the profound transformations of the 19th century, this notion began to shift. Artists turned toward originality and experimentation, breaking free of realism and ushering in new movements that expanded the technical, aesthetic, and thematic boundaries of art. In this new climate, inspiration flowed from a far broader cultural geography than ever before.

This evolution also unfolded in the Ottoman Empire, mirroring the broader cultural and social transformations of the period. Artists such as Osman Hamdi Bey, Şeker Ahmet Paşa, and Süleyman Seyyid—deeply influenced by Impressionism, Naturalism, and Realism during their time in Paris—pioneered a fresh artistic vision within Ottoman painting. In the early Republican era, sweeping reforms in art education and cultural institutions laid the groundwork for a modern artistic sensibility. Artists like İbrahim Çallı, Feyhaman Duran, and Fikret Mualla emerged as defining voices of this transformative period.

100 Artworks of the Century is one of five volumes in the 100 Works of the Century series, prepared as a modest tribute to the Republic of Türkiye’s centennial. This volume opens with Hüseyin Avni Lifij’s luminous painting Ak Gün, celebrating the end of the Turkish War of Independence.

The selection features compelling works by masters such as Abidin Dino—known for his distinctive themes and visual language—and spans a rich spectrum of Turkish artistic production, from the ceramics of Alev Ebüzziya to the video installations of Kutluğ Ataman. It also includes celebrated, award-winning figures like Malik Aksel, Refik Anadol, and Sabri Berkel.

By the nature of its concept, the selection is intentionally limited to 100 artists whose works span disciplines including painting, sculpture, video art, and installation. Framed by an elegant and minimalist design, the volume offers an accessible yet meaningful journey through a century of Turkish artistic expression.
